The School of Toronto Dance Theatre (Dance Arts Institute, as of June 1, 2023) is one of Canada’s leading dance training centres and offers training programs for professional and recreational dancers of all ages from its fully accessible studio and office space in Daniels Spectrum in Toronto’s Regent Park area. The School strives for artistic excellence in teaching, stays vitally aware of ongoing developments in the art form of dance, provides stable administration and financial management, and maintains a strong and responsible Board of Directors. Through its dedication to excellence, the School has remained at the forefront of training in Contemporary dance in Canada for over fifty years.

 

About the position

The School is in search of a teacher to collaborate on the development of our new Philosophy & Critical Theory course to be delivered in person in the 2023-2024 academic year. This seminar course will provide our second year students with an opportunity to investigate selected philosophical, theoretical and thematic topics, essential to situating and understanding the Contemporary dance and performances they see and do in the greater world of social, political and ethical systems, structures and ideas. The teaching of this course can emerge from the teacher’s area of research, but modules in queer and gender theory, and non-western thought are necessary.

We are looking for a candidate who teaches from an anti-racist educative position, and possesses a background in performance philosophy or art theory, and a thorough understanding of Contemporary dance.

Reporting to the Artistic & Pedagogical Director, the successful candidate must be able to work from our facilities.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • A graduate degree (MA, MFA or PhD) or equivalent in a field or discipline of demonstrated relevance. An established artistic practice in dance is an asset 
  • 3+ years teaching at the post secondary/undergraduate level
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and passionate about dance and literacy 
  • Works independently while collaborating effectively with the other faculty

 

Particulars of the position:

It is a 32-hour contract position with the strong possibility to renew. Compensation for the development of the course may be contracted, if required. Class times may vary. The 2023-2024 academic year will run runs from September 5, 2023 to May 10, 2024

 

Hourly: $65 per instructional hour. Class preparation and student evaluations are included in this hourly rate. Faculty meetings are contracted at $30 per hour.
