Crossroads is an exciting collection of new and reenvisioned works performed by Dance Arts students that celebrate the half-way mark of the 2025-26 school year. On the program are commissioned works by David Norsworthy and Susie Burpee, an excerpt of Amanda Acorn’s award-winning multiform(s), and a work devised from Woven and various solos by the seminal Peter Chin. Featuring both improvised structures and set material, the program approaches contemporary performance from a variety of temporal perspectives. Each process, work, and student has benefited from input and guidance of rehearsal direction from Rakeem Hardy/Norsworthy, Bonnie Kim/Burpee, Meryem Alaoui/Acorn, and Johanna Bergfelt/Chin, with design by Val Calam and Emerson Kafarowski with Helin Gungoren stage managing. We are grateful for the artistic team, excited for the students, and eager to share this program with you!

Amanda Acorn is a dance artist, researcher and choreographer based in Tkaronto, Canada, the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Her practice includes improvisation, somatic movement, writing and drawing as tools to explore the body as an empathetic and malleable system, wired for attunement. As a choreographer, she creates intimate, sensorial encounters and responsive environments for shared embodied exchange. Her work builds spaces for care through the intersections of her art practice and her work as a movement guide. As a dancer, she performed in and collaborated on projects as a company dancer with Dancemakers (2011-2016) and independently with choreographers such as Dana Michel (QC), Isabel Lewis (DE), Lemi Ponifasio (NZ), Andrea Spaziani (CA) and Brendan Fernandez (CA) among others. Her latest project, no place (2022), explores the body in dialogue with the material world through emergent, relational practice and an evolving construction of space and place. Her solo and group works have included presentations and commissions shared in diverse venues in Toronto including Toronto Dance Theatre, Videofag, The Citadel, Luminato Festival, The Music Gallery among others and across Canada at Festival TransAmériques in Montreal, Workers Arts Heritage Centre in Hamilton, Dancer’s Studio West in Calgary, Push Festival and Gold Saucer Studio in Vancouver, and the Festival of New Dance in St. John’s. She is a graduate of the Canadian College of Performing Arts (2000) and the Dance Arts Institute’s Professional Training Program (formerly School of Toronto Dance Theatre) (2008), and pursued independent studies in Amsterdam, Berlin, Vienna and Genoa, Italy. She holds an MA in Interdisciplinary Studies from York University (2023).

Susie Burpee is a performer, creator, and teacher whose work traverses both dance and theatre. Her decades of artistic work include such highlights as dancing with Le Groupe Dance Lab in the 90's, joining Toronto's Dancemakers in the 2000's, and in recent years, working with Tedd Robinson, Hanna Kiel and Alyssa Martin. Susie has received Dora Mavor Moore Awards for her duet collaborations with dance artists Linnea Swan and Dan Wild; touring these works across Canada. Alongside her dance practice, Susie studied Bouffon and Character at L'école Philippe Gaulier in Paris, and in 2020, she completed a Master’s degree in Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies at the University of Toronto. Susie has taught within post-secondary training programs across Canada, and she is thrilled to be working with the artists at Dance Arts Institute. Susie is Executive Director of Balancing Act Canada, a national organization that supports artist parents and caregivers.

Susie Burpee est artiste, créatrice et enseignante dont le travail traverse à la fois la danse et le théâtre. Au cours de les décennies de sa carrière artistique, elle s'est notamment illustrée en dansant avec Le Groupe Dance Lab dans les années 90, en rejoignant la compagnie Dancemakers de Toronto dans les années 2000 et, ces dernières années, en travaillant avec Tedd Robinson, Hanna Kiel et Alyssa Martin. Susie a reçu le prix Dora Mavor Moore pour ses collaborations en duo avec les danseurs Linnea Swan et Dan Wild, avec lesquels elle a présenté ces œuvres en tournée à travers le Canada. Parallèlement à sa pratique de la danse, Susie a étudié le bouffon et le personnage à l'École Philippe Gaulier à Paris, et en 2020, elle a obtenu une maîtrise en études dramatiques, théâtrales et scéniques à l'Université de Toronto. Peter Chin is a multidisciplinary artist from Jamaica and based in Toronto and Cambodia. He is
the artistic director of the performing arts company Tribal Crackling Wind and the co-founder of
the Neang Kong Kental (NKK) International Dance Centre in Cambodia. The work presented
this December is Chin’s tenth work for STDT/DAI since the first one twenty four years ago.
Since the mid 1980’s Chin has made a distinctive artistic mark in Toronto, across Canada and
internationally with his solo performances, choreographies, music, writing, film work and
mentoring. He is the recipient of many awards including a Gemini, multiple Dora Mavor Moore
awards, the Murriel Sherrin award for International Achievement in Dance, the Dance and
Media Snail award Japan, The Caribbean Lens best documentary award Los Angeles, among
others.

Peter Chin est artiste multidisciplinaire originaire de Jamaïque qui vit à Toronto et au Cambodge. Il est directeur artistique de la compagnie d'arts du spectacle Tribal Crackling Wind et cofondateur du Centre international de danse Neang Kong Kental (NKK) au Cambodge. L'œuvre présentée en décembre est la dixième œuvre de Chin pour le STDT/DAI depuis la première, il y a vingt-quatre ans. Depuis le milieu des années 1980, Chin s'est imposé comme une figure artistique incontournable à Toronto, au Canada et à l'échelle internationale grâce à ses performances solo, ses chorégraphies, sa musique, ses écrits, ses films et son mentorat. Il a reçu de nombreux prix, dont un Gemini, plusieurs prix Dora Mavor Moore, le prix Murriel Sherrin pour ses réalisations internationales dans le domaine de la danse, le prix Dance and Media Snail au Japon, le prix Caribbean Lens du meilleur documentaire à Los Angeles, entre autres.
David Norsworthy (he/him) is a Tkarón:to/Toronto-based dance artist, choreographer, producer, curator, and arts educator of mixed Japanese immigrant/British settler descent who is “an exceptionally lucid performer, impressive and articulate” (Globe and Mail). A graduate of The Juilliard School in New York City, he delights in asking questions, and is fascinated by the transformative power of dancing. David has performed with dance companies and collaborated with dance creators in Canada, USA, Sweden and Australia. Notable performance projects include productions with Dancenorth (Melbourne), Skånes Dansteater (Malmö), Peggy Baker Dance Projects (Toronto), and The Merce Cunningham Trust (New York City). His choreographic career has included independently produced full-length works, international tours, and commissioned projects for companies, universities and schools. David is the grateful recipient of the Ron Lenyk Award (2016) and was one of three finalists for the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Emerging Artist Award (2018). He is a Co-Founder/Co-Director of TOES FOR DANCE, and has recently served as a Board Member of CanAsian Dance, and a part-time Rehearsal Director for Norrdans, a contemporary dance company in Sweden. Between 2023 and 2025, he was a Co-Executive Artistic Producer for DanceWorks, a choreographic presentation platform in Toronto.
