Sam Grist

Sam Grist is a Toronto-based contemporary dancer, rehearsal director, teacher, and arts administrator. Sam has been a performer with surrealist dance-theatre company Rock Bottom Movement since 2012, winning Dora Mavor Moore Awards for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble” (among others) for their works “hollow mountain” (2020), “Sex Dalmatian” (2023), and “Big Time Miss” (2025). In 2025, Sam also made her acting debut with Coal Mine Theatre (Toronto) in their multi–Dora Award-winning production of “People, Places and Things“, directed by Diana Bentley and Alyssa Martin. In addition to her work with Rock Bottom, Sam has performed with choreographers including Hanna Kiel, David Earle, Susie Burpee, Shannon Litzenberger, Julia Aplin, Anisa Tejpar, and Clare Preuss. 

When she is not performing, Sam is a passionate teacher for students of all ages. She has been a guest teacher and/or rehearsal director for Rock Bottom Movement, Dance Arts Institute, Toronto Metropolitan University, The Fifth Dance, Quinte Ballet School, Mindful Movement Centre, VIEW Dance Convention, along with numerous arts high schools across the GTA.

Sam earned her BFA in Performance Dance from Toronto Metropolitan University in 2013, and is a certified Extension Method™ teacher and Mat Pilates instructor. She is honoured to be an Artistic Associate and the Admissions Coordinator at Dance Arts Institute’s Professional Training Program, and is thrilled to be supporting the next generation of dancers, creators, and arts workers.

Sam Grist est danseuse contemporaine, directrice de répétitions, enseignante et administratrice artistique à Toronto. Sam est artiste au sein de la compagnie de danse-théâtre surréaliste Rock Bottom Movement depuis 2012. Elle a remporté le prix Dora Mavor Moore dans la catégorie «Meilleure performance d’ensemble» (entre autres) pour leurs œuvres hollow mountain (2020), Sex Dalmatian (2023) et Big Time Miss (2025). En 2025, Sam a également fait ses débuts d’actrice avec le Coal Mine Theatre (Toronto) dans leur production People, Places and Things, récompensée par plusieurs prix Dora, mise en scène par Diana Bentley et Alyssa Martin. En plus de son travail avec Rock Bottom, Sam s’est produite avec des chorégraphes tels que Hanna Kiel, David Earle, Susie Burpee, Shannon Litzenberger, Julia Aplin, Anisa Tejpar et Clare Preuss. 

Quand elle ne se produit pas sur scène, Sam est une enseignante passionnée qui s’adresse à des élèves de tous âges. Elle a été enseignante invitée et/ou directrice de répétitions pour Rock Bottom Movement, Dance Arts Institute, Toronto Metropolitan University, The Fifth Dance, Quinte Ballet School, Mindful Movement Centre, VIEW Dance Convention, ainsi que pour de nombreuses écoles secondaires artistiques de la région du Grand Toronto. 

Sam a obtenu son baccalauréat en beaux-arts avec spécialisation en danse à l’Université métropolitaine de Toronto en 2013. Elle est également enseignante certifiée de la méthode Extension Method™ et instructrice de Pilates au sol. Elle est honorée d’être associée artistique et coordonnatrice des admissions au programme de formation professionnelle du Dance Arts Institute, et elle est ravie de soutenir la prochaine génération de danseurs, de créateurs et de travailleurs du milieu artistique.
