Dedra McDermott

Currently based in Tkarón:to/Toronto, Dedra McDermott is a Black, new-generation artist-researcher, emerging curator, producer, and movement dramaturg with a keen interest in performance, choreographic methodology, and divergent approaches to engaging with archival practices. With a foundation as a movement artist, her evolving interdisciplinary practice explores identity, memory, and grief—utilizing autoethnographic methodology to weave movement and literary choreographies that manifest into live, filmed, and installation works. She is a highly motivated emerging arts leader with over 10 years of professional experience as a performer (Film/TV/Stage) and arts administrator (Theatre/Dance).  As an emerging curator, she is curious about how stories are shared across generations, how embodied and ancestral knowledge is valued, and the ways that she can actively participate in the revalorization of choreographic voices working to shape, reframe, and re-educate the public on the realities of Black histories across the diaspora. In all facets of her evolving artistic practice, she is interested in how the choreographic imperative can alter and inform how artists and audiences can gather and experience each other differently. 

Dedra has earned a BFA in Choreography and Performance (York University), an MA in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies (University of Toronto), was a 2023-2024 Ontario Graduate Scholar and recently completed an MFA in Criticism and Curatorial Practice (OCAD University). Notable recent projects include Performing Care: Research Notes on “I Should Have Left You When” in Theatre Research in Canada . Vol. 45, No 2 (2024) and the public program Cartographies of Presence: Live at Mercer Union: a centre for contemporary art (2024). McDermott previously held the role of Co-Executive Artistic Producer of DanceWorks, a choreographic presentation platform in Toronto, Canada (August 2023 – August 2025).

Basée à Tkarón:to/Toronto, Dedra McDermott est une artiste-chercheuse noire de la nouvelle génération, commissaire émergente, productrice et dramaturge du mouvement qui s’intéresse particulièrement à la performance, à la méthodologie chorégraphique et aux approches divergentes des pratiques d’archivage. ​​Artiste du mouvement à ses débuts, elle explore aujourd’hui, à travers une pratique interdisciplinaire en constante évolution, les thèmes de l’identité, de la mémoire et du deuil. Elle utilise une méthodologie autoethnographique pour tisser des chorégraphies littéraires et gestuelles qui se manifestent dans des œuvres vivantes, filmées et installées. Elle est une leader artistique émergente très motivée qui compte plus de 10 ans d’expérience professionnelle en tant qu’artiste (cinéma/télévision/théâtre) et administratrice artistique (théâtre/danse). En tant que conservatrice émergente, elle s’intéresse à la manière dont les histoires sont transmises d’une génération à l’autre, à la valeur accordée aux connaissances incarnées et ancestrales, et aux moyens dont elle peut participer activement à la revalorisation des voix chorégraphiques qui s’efforcent de façonner, de recadrer et de rééduquer le public sur les réalités de l’histoire des Noirs à travers la diaspora. Dans toutes les facettes de sa pratique artistique en constante évolution, elle s’intéresse à la manière dont l’impératif chorégraphique peut modifier et influencer la façon dont les artistes et le public peuvent se réunir et se percevoir différemment.

Dedra est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en beaux-arts avec spécialisation en chorégraphie et en arts de la scène (Université York), d’une maîtrise en arts dramatiques, théâtre et arts de la scène (Université de Toronto), a été boursière de l’Ontario pour les études supérieures en 2023-2024 et a récemment obtenu une maîtrise en beaux-arts avec spécialisation en critique et pratique curatoriale (Université OCAD). Parmi ses projets récents notables, citons Performing Care: Research Notes on «I Should Have Left You When» dans Theatre Research in Canada. Vol. 45, n° 2 (2024) et le programme public Cartographies of Presence: Live at Mercer Union: a centre for contemporary art (2024). McDermott occupait auparavant le poste de coproductrice artistique exécutive de DanceWorks, une plateforme de présentation chorégraphique à Toronto, au Canada (août 2023 – août 2025).
