Christopher House

Born and raised in St. John’s, NL, Christopher House is a choreographer, performer, director, educator, curator and writer. He was resident choreographer and a leading dancer for Toronto Dance Theatre from 1979-2020, the last twenty-six years as Artistic Director, and has collaborated with such artists and organizations as Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, The National Ballet of Canada, Artistic Fraud, The Hidden Cameras, Kimsooja, Deborah Hay and Jordan Tannahill. His choreography has been presented in eighteen countries worldwide. His acclaimed solo New Tricks toured Canada 2023-25. In 2026 he performed solo for eighteen hours over three days as part of Hotel Confidential at the Royal Hotel, Picton, and gave two performances during Kimsooja’s Meta Painting at MOCA Toronto. Christopher House is the editor of Still With Us: Stories of HIV/AIDS and Dance in Canada, published in March 2026, and the curator of the upcoming exhibition of the same name coming to the ArQuives in Toronto on Feb. 4. 2027

He has taught composition and/or contemporary dance technique for Dance Arts (formerly the School of Toronto Dance Theatre), Canada’s National Ballet School, the Juilliard School, Rotterdamse Dansacademie, Contemporary Dancers School, Simon Fraser University, Sick and Twisted Theatre and the Banff Centre among many others. His awards and honours include the Muriel Sherrin Award for International Achievement in Dance, the Silver Ticket Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, an honorary doctorate from Memorial University, and the Order of Canada. In 2019, he was named by CBC Arts as one of 69 Canadian artists who have shaped Canada’s rich LGBTQ History.

Originaire de St. John’s, à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, Christopher House est chorégraphe, interprète, directeur, éducateur, commissaire d’exposition et écrivain. Il a enseigné la composition et/ou la technique de danse contemporaine à Dance Arts (anciennement la School of Toronto Dance Theatre), à l’École nationale de ballet du Canada, à la Juilliard School, à la Rotterdamse Dansacademie, à la Contemporary Dancers School, à l’Université Simon Fraser, au Sick and Twisted Theatre et au Banff Centre, entre autres.
